Waasa Inaabidaa: we look in all directions - A gathering for Indigenous People working in Science Communication and STE(A)M Spaces

Tuesday, May 16 from 2:30-5 pm  at The Mikinàk Ceremonial Lodge

This event requires registration as spaces are limited.

This gathering will provide an opportunity for those who identify as First Nations, Inuk and/or Métis working in science communication and STE(A)M spaces, to gather, connect, share success stories and challenges with each other. The discussion will consider how to build a more inclusive and welcoming space for First Nations, Inuk and Métis within the CASC network.

Facilitated by Melanie Goodchild, moose clan, who is an Anishinaabekwe (Ojibway woman) from Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation and Ketegaunseebee (Garden River) First Nation. She is a systems thinking and complexity scholar who offers a uniquely Anishinaabeg approach to making sense of society's most entrenched problems. Melanie is currently a Systems Changer in Residence at CASC.

The Mikinàk Ceremonial Lodge is a newly opened space in Building 39 on the Central Experimental Farm, on the unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin People. The design of the lodge combines cultural elements of the three distinct Indigenous groups: First Nations, Métis Nation, and Inuit. In addition to being smudge-friendly, the ceremonial room accommodates the Qullik (ceremonial Inuit oil lamp). The Lodge was created to provide a permanent, spiritual space for their Indigenous staff to meet and exchange ideas, organize cultural activities, such as crafts and smudging ceremonies, and to use healing herbs. The Lodge also offers a teaching and learning environment to non-Indigenous employees and to the general public by focusing on sharing Indigenous knowledge and lived experiences with visitors.
